The Shooting Industry in Wales: A Tradition That Inspires Elevenses

Hello again everyone! We hope you're ready to dive into a bit of Welsh history with us today? Here at Elevenses, we’re passionate about not only crafting delicious gin but also honouring the traditions that inspired our distillery. In this blog, we’re taking a closer look at the rich heritage of game shooting in Wales - something that’s been close to our family’s heart for generations. From the origins of the sport to the meaning behind our name, "Elevenses," we’ll share how this cherished pastime shaped our distillery and why it means so much to us. So grab a cup of tea (or maybe a gin and tonic) and enjoy!

Game shooting has long been a part of Welsh heritage, with its roots stretching back centuries. In Wales, this tradition dates to the time when it was not only a sport but also a necessity for sourcing food. Communities would come together for hunts, sharing stories, bonding, and, of course, enjoying the fruits of their labour. Over time, game shooting has evolved into a cherished pastime, passed down through generations, often symbolizing camaraderie, conservation, and respect for the countryside.

As a family business, Elevenses is born from our deep connection to this rich history. Game shooting has been a meaningful part of our family’s heritage for a long time. For us it's the whole experience - the early mornings, the friendships forged in the fields, and yes, the all-important break known as "Elevenses"!

For those unfamiliar, "Elevenses" refers to a mid-morning break - often a drink and maybe a snack enjoyed while out on a shoot. This little break is just as much a tradition as the shoot itself, offering everyone a moment to gather and recharge before heading back out. It’s a pause in the day where stories are shared and bonds are strengthened. Our gin distillery is named in honour of this cherished tradition, which plays a big part in our lives!

Why gin, you might ask? Well, after years of enjoying our own versions of “Elevenses” out in the Welsh countryside, we wanted to create something that reflected our family values, our connection to the land, and our love for the outdoors. Elevenses Gin represents everything we love about the tradition of game shooting - togetherness, craftsmanship, and a nod to our Welsh roots. With flavours that capture the essence of Wales, our gin reflects the heritage and countryside that inspire us.

Shooting dogs, often known as gundogs, play an essential role in the field, especially during game shoots. Trained to retrieve game, they help ensure that no injured or downed birds are left behind, making them invaluable companions. Beyond their practical role, these dogs are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and ability to work seamlessly alongside their handlers. For us, our beloved Labrador, Alfie, was more than just a shooting dog; he was part of the family. Alfie, who recently passed away at the age of 12, had his face proudly featured in the Elevenses logo from day one. His calm temperament made him the perfect shooting companion, and his legacy continues to live on in our brand. We were devastated by his loss, but we honour him every day through our work, and his spirit remains a constant part of Elevenses!

At Elevenses, we’re not just proud of our gin, but of what it stands for: family, tradition, and a deep respect for the land. It’s why we’re committed to keeping these traditions alive in a way that also supports sustainability and wildlife conservation efforts across Wales. After all, it’s not just about honouring the past, but also looking to the future!
